Abstract |
A project was conducted to evaluate measures for controlling loss of asbestos fibers from asbestos-cement (A/C) water distribution pipe under aggressive water conditions. During Phase 1, water quality data were analyzed for the distribution system of Bellevue, Washington, which receives water from the Seattle Water Dept. The water was shown to be aggressive to A/C pipe. The pilot tests in Phase 1 evaluated eight corrosion control strategies. Zinc chloride/pH adjustment was chosen for the Phase 2 field test. Phase 1 also involved the selection of quantitative measures to determine the hardness of A/C pipe before and after exposure to aggressive water. Results over time from the test section with zinc chloride and the control section were similar, suggesting that alkalinity and pH increases in effect at the time of the field test may have acted to protect the pipe from deterioration. |
