Abstract
The report describes the results of a gasoline volatility/exhaust emission test program done under EPA contract by ATL Laboratories in Columbus, Ohio. The program was developed to help explain why hydrocarbon exhaust emissions frequently increase when using fuels with high volatility. The testing involved a 1984 3.8L Olds Cutlass with multi-point fuel injection. Two different fuels (9.0 and 11.5 psi RVP) were used, along with three different conditions of the evaporative canister (no purge, 'Standard' canister loading, and a loading beyond breakthrough). In addition, tests were performed with both fuels with the catalytic converter removed and a standard canister loading to determine the effect of RVP on engine-out emissions.
