Abstract
During the photooxidation of olefins, three reactions appear important: the reaction of olefins with oxygen atoms, with ozone, and with active intermediates. Medium to severe eye irritation was obtained with photooxidation of mixtures containing 0.5 ppm each of certain olefins and nitrogen dioxide. The predicted effect on irritation of control of either olefins or oxides of nitrogen depends on various factors. Aerosols capable of reducing visibility to less than 10 miles are formed when 0.1 ppm of sulfur dioxide is photooxidized in the presence of an olefin-nitrogen dioxide mixture.
