Requirements for Transportation Facilities

Transportation authorities such as state Departments of Transportation are responsible for maintaining stormwater systems along streets, roads, and highways and, depending on location, are also regulated as MS4s under the NPDES permit program. As part of the proposed stormwater rulemaking, EPA is exploring the option of establishing specific MS4 requirements for transportation facilities.

EPA has a separate website on road-related MS4s that includes DOT-specific stormwater information, technical studies, a list of state DOT stormwater websites, and case studies.

Additional information on the stormwater rulemaking as it relates to transportation facilities will be posted here as it becomes available.
