EPA to Hold Q&A Session on Vessel Permits

The Environmental Protection Agency has held one and will hold another online question-and-answer sessions on Feb. 7 to receive public comment on its proposed National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permits for vessel discharges. The Feb. 7 webinar will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. In November, EPA proposed a five-year vessel general permit that is consistent with International Maritime Organization standards and with the first phase of proposed U.S. Coast Guard standards (231 DEN A-14, 12/1/11).

The EPA standards for the first time would include technology-based effluent limits to reduce the presence of invasive species and germ-causing bacteria in ballast water, which is carried aboard ships in tanks for stability. Until Feb. 21, EPA will accept comments identified by Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OW-2011-0141 on the draft vessel general permit for vessels that are 79 feet or longer and comments identified by Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OW-2011-0150 on the draft general permit for vessels smaller than 79 feet at
