Frequently Asked Questions for Shale Gas Extraction is available online
The rapid expansion of gas extraction from the Marcellus and other shale deposits has presented wastewater permitting authorities with a challenge in protecting human health and the environment. EPA has created shale gas extraction frequently asked questions (FAQs) that are intended to serve as guidance to State and Federal permitting authorities in addressing treatment and disposal of wastewater from shale gas extraction. The FAQs discuss the wastewater issues and pollutants associated with shale gas extraction and how they can be addressed under existing regulations. Relevant regulations that are discussed cover oil and gas extraction, centralized waste treatment, acceptance and notification requirements for publicly owned treatment works, pretreatment, and stormwater. The FAQs should assist EPA Regional offices and States in their efforts to work with the regulated community to address shale gas extraction wastewater. The FAQs can be accessed online at http://cfpub.epa.gov/npdes/hydrofracturing.cfm.
