Chicago's green roof program began with the 20,300 square foot demonstration roof placed on Chicago City Hall. As a result of the success of the demonstration roof, Chicago launched an extensive green roof program, installing more than 80 green roofs in the city, as part of their green infrastructure initiative.

Population: 2.9 million

Description:
Chicago’s green infrastructure initiative was launched to control CSO events while also achieving other environmental benefits such as urban heat island mitigation and reduced energy demands. To achieve these goals, the city launched an extensive green roof program which has led to the installation of more than 80 green roofs throughout the city, including the 20,300 square foot demonstration roof that currently sits atop city hall. In addition, the city has funded a series of high-profile green-building projects. The Chicago Center for Green Technology, for instance, is a 34,000 square foot educational center that became the first municipal building to receive the LEED platinum rating. Chicago has also adopted a series of municipal policies that promote decentralized stormwater management and promote the use of green building technologies in new construction projects. In 2004, the city developed what has become known as “The Chicago Standard” – a set of municipal construction standards that are based on the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system – that promote sustainability, water and energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and on-site stormwater management.
