Research Category: Hazardous Waste/Remediation , Targeted Research

Description:

Objective:

The overall objective of the Gulf Coast Hazardous Substance Research Center (GCHSRC) is to conduct research to provide more effective hazardous substance response and waste management throughout the Gulf Coast. During Year 1 of the project, the GCHSRC’s research program supported 16 projects that addressed a wide range of environmental needs associated with Gulf Coast industries. Research projects were funded in all three of the Center’s major focus areas: site remediation, pollution prevention, and waste treatment. These projects, conducted by the nine member universities of the Center, addressed multimedia environmental issues related to pollutants in soil, water, and air and involved both biological and physical-chemical processes.

Although each funded project is separately reported, the significant accomplishments from the funded projects are summarized below. In general, the funded projects have achieved various degrees of success in terms of the objectives, goals, and milestones established for the projects. The accomplishments related to the educational component have included the training of undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows; accomplishments related to the technology transfer component have included the completion of theses and dissertations, publication of papers, and presentations at conferences.
