These final reports are a summary of reference value arrays with critical supporting documentation for the chemicals manganese, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene. Each chemical is covered in a separate document, and each is a statement of the status of the available inhalation health effect reference values developed by Agencies or other Authoritative Organizations for the specific chemical. The individual chemical documents include the process used to derive the values, and references to original documentation are provided if more detailed information is needed.

The US EPA’s National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA) has undertaken a project to standardize the development of graphical arrays comparing inhalation health effect reference values across durations, populations, and intended use. Each document provides accompanying text with each array to enable an appropriate comparison of the displayed reference values along with tables that include the numerical values, and other details on derivation of the values (i.e., critical study[ies], point of departure [POD], uncertainty factors [UF], duration extrapolations, etc). The five most recent documents in this series separately cover the BTEX chemicals (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) and manganese. They were generated in support of the Risk and Technology Review (RTR) Program - http://www.epa.gov/ttn/atw/rrisk/rtrpg.html - within the Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards (OAQPS) of the US EPA. All have undergone peer review and NCEA management review at the Division Level. The BTEX documents went through peer review as a package with a separate peer review for the Manganese document. They were released together in December 2012.

EPA has undertaken a project to standardize the development of graphical arrays that compare inhalation health effect reference values across durations, populations , and intended use. A number of program offices within the Agency, as well as other Federal and State agencies, have an interest in having these types of arrays available. The eventual users of these arrays and accompanying documentation includes risk assessment professionals, decision makers, and the general public.
