The Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) is a database of EPA's consensus opinion of the human health effects that may result from exposure to various substances found in the environment. A Toxicological Review and IRIS Summary were prepared for barium and compounds in 1998 (U.S. EPA, 1998), with minor revisions made in 1999. A discussion paper presenting a proposed RfD for barium and compounds was prepared for external peer review. If the proposed RfD is sufficiently supported by the peer review panel, it will be subjected to Agency-wide scientific review to determine EPA's consensus opinion. EPA is hereby providing notice that the external review draft of the discussion paper and the charge to the peer reviewers are available for public viewing at regulations.gov under Docket ID No. ORD-2004-0005 To attend the peer review meeting, register by June 1, 2004, by visiting: http://www.orau.gov/2004bariumreview. Interested parties may also register by contacting Leslie Shapard at 865-241-5784. Space is limited, and reservations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
