Background
The draft Toxicological Review of chlordecone provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to subchronic and chronic exposure to chlordecone. Chlordecone is a chlorinated pesticide which before the cancelation of its production and use in the late 1970s was used primarily as an insecticide to control slugs, snails and fire ants. Chlordecone has been found at hazardous waste sites and is also a degradation product of the pesticide Mirex in the environment. Chlordecone was nominated for evaluation by the Superfund Technical Support Center.
This assessment contains the derivation of an oral reference dose for chronic exposure and a qualitative evaluation of suggestive carcinogenic potential.

History/Chronology
| 2004 | The chlordecone IRIS assessment was initiated in 2004. Chlordecone was nominated for assessment by the Superfund Technical Support Center. An assessment for chlordecone is not currently on IRIS. |

Next Steps
