PAHs (polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons) are a group of
ubiquitous substances that occur in occupational environments
as a consequence of the combustion of hydrocarbons
and coal, vehicle emissions, etc. Some PAHs are
known to be carcinogenic in animal tests, and accordingly,
most legislation requires that the air concentration
of several of them should be kept at minimum
values, implying a model of "no safe threshold" (ACGIH
1985, BChI 1988, DNHST 1991).
