Spontaneous tumors in the lung of guinea pigs occur rarely. On intravenous injection of methylcholanthrene or dibenzanthracene, pulmonary tumors were induced in the guinea pig by Heston and Deringer. On oral adminsitration of the systemic carcinogens diethylnitrosamine and dioxane, tumors and tumor-like hyperplasias were induced in the lung of guinea ipigs in our laboratories. On intraperitoneal injection of the aglucone of cycasine, methylazoxymethanol, a tumor in the lung and malignant tumors in the nasal cavity of guinea pigs were induced by Spatz. In the lung of guinea pigs, tumors and tumor-like hyperplasias are multiple and are located peripherally, intrabronchially, and peribronchially. The lesions are peripheral papillary adenomas, intrabronchial respiratory or transitional cell papillomas, and peribronchial adenomatous hyperplasias. The resemblance of these lesions in the lung of guinea pigs to the pulmonary adenomatosis of mice and to the jagziekte of sheep is discussed.
