IPA COPYRIGHT: ASHP The percutaneous absorption and potential skin irritating effects of suspensions of 20% microfine or ACS grade zinc oxide and suspensions of 20% titanium dioxide (titanium oxide), each of which were prepared in water, castor oil, or polyethylene glycol, were studied in New Zealand rabbits; a single application of each suspension was left in place on the rabbits for a 4 h period or 3 applications of each suspension given every 24 h were left in place for 2 h periods. No irritation of rabbit skin was observed after the application of suspensions of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. The results indicated that percutaneous absorption of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide occurred. The absorption was influenced by the type of vehicle used in the suspensions.
