[09/24/09] EPA announces the release of the Toxicological Review of trichloroacetic acid in a September 24, 2009 Federal Register Notice. This draft assessment is provided for public viewing and comment. Public comments received on the Toxicological Review within 60 days after the release of the FRN will be provided to the external peer reviewers for their consideration. Any comments not received within the requested time period will be considered by EPA in their revisions. The FR also announced a public listening session that was held on November 4, 2009. The external peer review meeting will be held on December 10, 2009 as announced in the November 10, 2009 Federal Register Notice announcement.

EPA is conducting a peer review of the scientific basis supporting the human health hazard and dose-response assessment of trichloroacetic acid that will appear in the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) database.
Background
The draft Toxicological Review of trichloroacetic acid provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to chronic exposure to trichloroacetic acid. Trichloroacetic acid is used as an antiseptic, skin peeling agent, and chemical intermediate to produce a variety of organic chemicals. Trichloroacetic acid is also used industrially as an etching and pickling agent for surface treatment of metals and as a solvent in the plastics industry. Trichloroacetic acid is formed from organic materials during water chlorination.

This assessment contains the derivation of a chronic reference dose and cancer oral slope factor.

History/Chronology

Mar 1996EPA posted the IRIS assessment for trichloroacetic acid on the IRIS database (cancer assessment only).
Sep 2009EPA released an external review draft for public review and comment. A public listening session to discuss the report will be held on November 4, 2009.
Sep 2009EPA hosted an interagency science discussion on the review of the draft IRIS Summary and Toxicological Review of Trichloroacetic Acid.
Nov 2009EPA announces the details of an external peer review workshop to be held on December 10, 2009 in a November 10, 2009 Federal Register Notice.

Next Steps

Following external peer review of the report, the final assessment will be posted to the IRIS database.
