Notice

EPA announces the release of the Toxicological Review of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane in the September 24, 2009 Federal Register Notice. This draft assessment is provided for public viewing and comment. Public comments received on the Toxicological Review within 60 days after the release of the FRN will be provided to the external peer reviewers for their consideration. The date and location of the external peer review meeting will be provided in a separate announcement.

EPA is conducting a peer review of the scientific basis supporting the human health hazard and dose-response assessment of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane that will appear on the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) database.
Background
The draft Toxicological Review of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to subchronic and chronic exposure to 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane. 1,1,2,2 Tetrachloroethane (1,1,2,2TCE; CASRN 79-34-5) is a synthetic halogenated hydrocarbon that is a colorless, nonflammable liquid at room temperature. The major use for 1,1,2,2 tetrachloroethane was in the production of trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, and 1,2-dichloroethylene. This assessment contains the derivation of both a subchronic and chronic reference dose and an oral cancer slope factor. EPA is also putting forth for external review the statement that the human carcinogenic potential of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane is “likely to be carcinogenic to humans”.

History/Chronology

Mar 1987An assessment for 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane is currently available on IRIS and contains a carcinogenicity assessment last revised in 1994.
20031,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane was nominated for reassessment by the Office of Air and Radiation/OAQPS and Region 4.
Sep 2009EPA released an external review draft of the assessment for public review and comment.
