Grassland Reserve Program
|
The 2002 Farm Bill established the Grassland Reserve Program (GRP) for the purpose of restoring and conserving two million acres of grassland, rangeland, and pastureland. GRP will do this through the use of up to 30-year rental agreements and 30-year or permanent easements. Rental and easement payments are based on a percentage of the fair market value of the land, less the grazing value of the land for the period during the contract or easement period. (GRP allows participants to enroll in 10, 15, 20, or 30-year rental agreement contracts, or 30-year permanent easements.) GRP lands may be used for haying and grazing under a conservation plan. Total funding through 2007 is authorized at $254 million in easements, rental agreements, and cost-share payments for enrolling up to 2 million acres. The current value of unfunded backlog is $898 million. |
