Overview FY 2009 Funding Levels
Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education  The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture works to advance farming systems that are more profitable, environmentally sound and good for communities through an innovative grants program. More specifically, SARE funds scientific investigation and education to reduce the use of chemical pesticides, fertilizers, and toxic materials in agricultural production; to improve management of on-farm resources to enhance productivity, profitability, and competitiveness; to promote crop, livestock, and enterprise diversification and to facilitate the research of agricultural production systems in areas that possess various soil, climatic, and physical characteristics; to study farms that have are managed using farm practices that optimize on-farm resources and conservation practices; and to promote partnerships among farmers, nonprofit organizations, agribusiness, and public and private research and extension institutions.
