Overview FY 2009 Funding Levels
Learn and Serve America Program  Learn and Serve America provides students and youth with opportunities to serve America by connecting community service with academic learning, personal growth, and civic responsibility. Typical projects address local needs in the areas of education, public safety, the environment, and other human needs. The goal of the program is to implement service-learning, described as a method whereby students or participants learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that is conducted in and meets the needs of a community. Service learning is (1) coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institution of higher education, or community service program, and with the community; (2) helps foster civic responsibility; (3) integrated into and enhances the academic curriculum of the students, or the educational components of the community service program in which the participants are enrolled; and (4) provides structured time for the students or participants to reflect on the service experience.  $19.9 million
